Math Warm Ups

Engaging activities we use for mathematical discussions and building math vocabulary.

"Estimation clipboard"

One of our favourite activities from Steve Wyborney who creates and shares these for FREE on his website. Our students always cheer when they see "Estimation Clipboard" is on the daily schedule and we are confident it will become a favourite of your students as well!.

"splat"

Another gem from Steve Wyborney! This very visual activity helps students with their fact family knowledge and helps students explore that there is more than one way to find an answer to a question. Always stimulates such interesting discussions and so much fun hearing the students explain how they got their answers!

"mind reader"

An engaging whole class warm up activity. Don’t forget to download our FREE resource to get started!

"wodb"

WODB or "Which One Doesn't Belong?" are quick and engaging visual images that allow students to think critically and look at things from different points of view. There is always great discussion and healthy debate in our classrooms when we do WODB with our students.

"number talks/images"

This activity supports computational fluency as students are asked to look at an equation and come up with an answer without using a paper or pen. The best part of this activity is the different ways your students come up with the solution. Teachers love this activity because it helps develop mental math strategies.

"Target number"

This is a great open-ended activity that has every child feeling successful!! For this activity you choose a number then students create equations using different operations that equal the target number. It's a great way to teach the concepts of decomposing numbers (ex. 500 can be broken down into 100+100+300) as well as commutative property (ex. 40+30 has the same value as 30+40). And it's so much fun to see the children challenge themselves week after week to come up with different equations and see how proud they are to share them!
